The Brown House
As with the other homes at Olde Bulltown Village , this home was designed as an 18th century home that grew over time, according to past owners’ needs and accumulated resources. Fieldstone taken directly from this site was used to construct the main house. The center section is log and chinking, and originally would have been reassembled from the summer kitchen (separate outbuilding). Beveled and beaded cedar siding covers the eastern frame section. The roof is cedar shingled with copper gutters. The bonnet-topped brick chimney, the flagstone patio, the local fieldstone/board and batten carriage shed, the seven shed dormers and the covered porch with cutout railing are indicative of the extensive thought given to the home’s historical appearance.
Upon entering the home, a guest is greeted by examples of redefined craftsmanship. The Great Room is anchored by a massive Chester County fieldstone fireplace (one of four in the home). Exposed rough hewn, hemlock beams
and collar ties lift the planked ceiling to the second floor gallery. Quarter-sawn oak flooring with
a hand rubbed tongue oil finish tie each room together.
In the Kitchen, cherry wood cabinets are locally crafted with finished techniques that lend an aged painted look. A farm style soapstone sink and counter top surround the oak island workspace. The open Dining Area completes the Kitchen.
The Master Bedroom features a raised paneled Rumsford fireplace with a herringbone patterned brick hearth. A free standing claw and ball tub, subway tiled shower and two marble topped vanities are highlights in the master Bath . The sitting Room, adjacent to the Suite, features painted built-in book cases and a 12 light door leading to the scenic covered porch. Each window has 16” deep set sills surrounded by chamfered corners, details that have been admired for centuries.
Upstairs, in the West Guest Room is another Rumsford fireplace with a herrington patterned hearth surrounded by a brick ribboned hearth. Both Guest Baths have antique vanities resting upon octagon and dot heated tile floors.
On the way to the Play Room in the lower level, the stairway is lined by canning shelves, and opens to a spacious area focused on a raised hearth, fieldstone fireplace capped with an early barn beam as its mantle. Completing the Play
Room is a full bath and finely finished wet bar with soapstone counter top.
