The History of Bulltown
Bulltown was an early commercial and industrial center founded by Colonel Thomas Bull. Shortly after his retirement as manage of Warwick Furnace in 1780, Bull erected a large fieldstone mansion, known thereafter as “ Mount Pleasant .”
Additionally, as part of his settlement, Bull constructed a tenant house, a blacksmith shop, a saw/grist mill and two lime kilns. Mount Pleasant still stands proudly on the east side of Bulltown Road .
Bulltown acquired its name during the residency of Bull’s eldest son, the Reverend Levi Bull, who inherited Mount Pleasant following his father’s death. Bull’s grandson, Colonel Thomas K. Bull, served gallantly in the Civil War. During that time, Bulltown was described as a “beehive of small industries” including the mill, a creamery, a manufacturer of buggies and sleighs, as well as other shops for various goods.
Although few today even realize Bulltown existed, it contributed significantly to the rich history and respected heritage of northern Chester County . For this reason, it is our vision to resurrect this town from the graveyard of history by creating Olde Bulltown Village , a tribute to Bulltown and life as we all think it should be.
